movebasel presents

Introduction to Movement Culture

Workshop with Tiago Martins from Lisbon at The Movement Spot, Pratteln. An opportunity to learn, connect, and practice with other movement enthusiasts. No prior knowledge necessary!

Squat Development: Learn how to develop a strong, adaptive, and intelligent lower body.

Coordination: Discover how your body can operate harmoniously and efficiently and get the tools to develop your spatial awareness.

Spine Vocabulary: Understand the spine’s function better and learn to appreciate its mechanics.

Locomotion: Explore a set of movement patterns that will help you to develop internal mobility, organic strength and balance.

Let’s get moving!

10 am – 13 pm

Workshop Part 1: Squat Development

Introduction

  • Know the space and be aware of others
  • Use the space, map the floor with your feet. Activate the main lower body joints: feet, knees and hips
  • Space awareness with none and with all: move and don’t touch the others. Three variations: use all the space available, move in half the space, move in a very small space

The Squat

Development of the squat as a resting position and its mechanics:

  • Isolation: mobilize ankles and knees in a lunge position against the wall
  • Integration: The Duck Walk, three variations:
    • parallel steps
    • rotate legs internally and externally while stepping forward
    • lunge (long step)
  • Squat mobility (while squatting for 5 minutes): move knees, hips, arms, spine
  • Partner game: balancing in a squat, partner tries to push you off balance
  • Sissy squat: from a squat push the knee forward and lean back slightly.
  • Partner game: one person puts a hand on the floor, palms up. Their partner tries to gently touch the hand with one of the knees out of the squat position.
  • From a squat to all fours, push and jump

Lunch break

14 – 17 pm

Workshop Part 2: Spine Vocabulary

Awakening of the Spine

Flexion, extension and rotation

  • In a sitting position: move your spine in a non-stop motion from top to bottom / bottom to top. Do a cat/cow motion on all fours. Do waving movements on all fours with knees off the ground.
  • Standing against the wall with a partner: spinal waves from top to bottom / from bottom to top (same pattern as sitting, using the wall as a reference).
  • Standing with a partner: one person bends forward until the hands touch the floor. Their partner holds back the head from behind on the extension (10 times, change roles).
  • Standing rotations: one person leads the motion by moving index finger from side to side, their partner follows the finger thus rotating the spine (10 times, change roles)
  • One person holds out his hand behind the back of the other. Their partner has to turn without moving the feet and try to touch the hand, further up, further down, using the left or right hand.
  • Mirror Game: follow the hand of the partner trying to mirror the movement. Slowy, steady and controlled.
  • Reflexion Game: follow the body movements of your partner
  • Zen Archery Practice: use a small stick to scan the partner. Don’t touch the stick and move around like water.

Sunday, 12 June

10 am – 13 pm

Workshop Part 3: Coordination

What is walking? Avoiding to fall! The Art of walking (walking patterns):

  • One person circles head and arms while rotating around own axis. Their partner asks to change rotational directions of head, arms or body: three different tasks to coordinate.
  • Ipsi lateral and contra lateral patterns: walk around in ipsi/contra forward, ipsi/contra backwards. Make it playful.
  • Outdoor game play with tennis balls. Serious playfulness: dog attention, cat movement! From warm up to coordination, partner work and footwork.

13 – 14 pm

Lunch break

14 – 17 pm

Workshop Part 4: Locomotion

Locomotion patterns

From squat development into locomotion patterns:

  • From all fours press and pull on the spot (core strength)
  • Shadow Game: follow the movement of your partner
  • Push, Pull & Jump Game, elements incorporated:
    • Duck Walks
    • Rolé
    • Crab
    • L-Sit
    • Rotation
    • Cossack In
  • Hip High and Low: move around and change the position of your hip. Bring it low (close to the floor), middle height (knee level) or up (standing position)
  • Partner game: position your hip at the opposite level of your partner’s
  • Improvisation with everyone: combination of all movement elements, follow one person
